Birkenstocks are often viewed as the antithesis of fashion. With their clunky soles made of mixed rubber and cork and thick leather straps, it isn’t any wonder that many people are turned off by this shoe. However, their years of being shunned are over; instead, Birkenstocks have come back as the new “it" sandal, now appearing in stores, fashion magazines, and on the feet of both men and women who once wouldn’t have been seen in anything less than a pair of sleek Nikes or Steve Madden.

With the recent expansion and popularity of Birkenstocks, one man’s business has been booming. Ohio resident Tom Lonergan has become known as the "Birkenstock Doctor," and he is one of Birkenstock’s few authorized repairmen. For $85, he will replace the cork foot bed and the sole, clean the straps, and seal the cork of the shoe. His mail order Birkenstocks repair business doubled in orders overnight, receiving packages with zip codes from all over the United States.

Before he began his renowned business as the Birkenstock doctor, he worked in real estate for 10 years. After retiring, Lonergan sought out to find something to do with his new free time. Since he enjoys working with his hands and is a longtime Birkenstock wearer and lover himself, he decided to call the shoe company for a job. They offered Lonergan a trial license as an authorized repairman so long as he was willing to buy the necessary equipment. This was the creation of the Birkenstock doc

For all the fellow Birkenstock owners, lovers, and wearers out there, feel free to check out Lonergan’s website birkdoc.com when you find yourself in need of a repair. Although I am not an owner of a pair of trendy, coveted Birkenstocks, I do understand the feeling of not being ready to entirely replace your favorite pair of shoes just yet; so I am a huge fan of the Birkenstock Doctor. I just might be ready to jump on the Birkenstock bandwagon.
